The Rusland Movement visit
Date: 7th Nov 2019 @ 4:04pm
On Monday of this week the children from Class 2 and 3 visited this exhibition in the Priory Church, which stimulated their creative and curious minds, as the craftsmanship was just so beautiful. Dan was on hand to talk to the children about how the furniture was made, materials sourced and skilfully transformed into chairs, larders, desks, sideboards, dressers, wardrobes and more. Everyone listened so attentively and asked very pertinent questions about the stages involved in the making of such beautiful objects.
They learnt about the different types of wood, how to plane it down to a smooth surface, how to create a curve in the wood by using very thin strips of the wood stuck together to enable the twist, as well as the hours spent creating the designs before even the many hours of construction took place. They saw first hand the design images Dan had drawn using perspective and detail to create the 'bespoke' furniture.
Some of the children spoke about their interest in woodwork skills which were already established and how they would love to learn more.
To see the possibilities of creativity first hand was just wonderful. It was a very special morning and supported our Artsmark work to engage with crafts people and the local community, learning from others and understanding that anything is possible in our lifes journey, with determination, resilience and the will to learn new skills.
Thank you to the Priory and The Rusland Movement for giving us the opportunity to visit the exhibition and especially to Dan for giving up his precious time to tell us about his and others work.
