Dorothy Milner - Chair of the Full Governing Body/Foundation Governor
Since September 2018, I have held the position of Chair of Governors, and changed my role from an Associate member of the Governing Body to a Foundation Governor, a role which is endorsed by Cartmel Priory PCC and the Diocese of Carlisle. I look forward to developing both these roles alongside being Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee.
I started teaching in 1974 and retired at the end of 2011, but have retained my interest in education through voluntary work in a number of local schools. Initially a Home economics teacher for five years before having children, I have also taught in the Adult Education sector utilising my skills with patchwork and quilting.
During my teaching career I taught across Key Stage 1, but with a specific focus in Year 2. I was Literacy Co-ordinator for a number of Years and a Leading Teacher in the County for Literacy, developing School Improvement in a number of Schools. I was fortunate enough to be involved in a number of initiatives aimed at raising standards, including ‘Every Child A Writer’ and ‘Wave 3 Maths’ interventions as well as the early development of the ‘Creative Curriculum.' My interest and skill base in English enables me to work closely with the English Co-Ordinator in school , meeting regularly to monitoring this subject development.
As well as working part time in a local school I developed CPD for teachers alongside Cumbria Local Authority school improvement officers delivering training for Key Stage 1 SAT’s Assessment procedures, Training for Teaching Assistants (ELS) as well as undertaking Mentoring qualifications for supervising NQT Induction processes and Initial Teacher Training supervision. Going back to study for a Master Degree in Education with a Special Educational Needs pathway and becoming a Specialist Teacher for Specific Learning Difficulties I have a strong interest in these areas.
In my spare time I am a grandmother, spending many precious times with them, and being a part of their growing independence. I enjoy keeping up with current trends and initiatives in education and look forward to continuing to develop my Governor role at Cartmel CE school to benefit children's education.
