Class 2 - The Sunflowers 2016 - 2017
I am the Class 2 teacher. I love teaching English as I used to be a newspaper reporter. Big football fan - Barrow AFC season ticket holder and Evertonian.
I teach Class 2 on a part time basis covering maternity leave for Mrs Stagg. I live in the beautiful village of Cartmel and feel so privileged to work in such a wonderful school. My hobbies are walking, mountain biking, singing, acting and reading. I love to spend time with my family and my favourite holiday destination is Northumberland.
Welcome to Class Two
Class Two is a mixture of Year 3 and 4 children - there are 20 of them in total.
The class teaching is split between Mr Dunstan and Mrs Unsworth (maternity cover for Mrs Stagg). We also have Miss Lowther as a class support and Miss Lace who carries out intervention work across all classes.
Along with the rest of the school we teach in a fun, creative, cross curricular way through a range of topics over the year covering aspects of the National Curriculum for both year groups. We have a two year rolling programme which ensures all children cover all aspects of the NC over their two years in the class.
Spring Term 2017
This term our topic is: Our world. We will be comparing an area of Europe to North America. We will also be studying the human and physical characteristics, animals and their habitats and comparing the regions.
Our main curriculum focuses:
Geography: Through our comparison topic we will be locating countries of the world on maps, with a particular focus on the Nordic countries of Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. We'll also be learning about the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and researching different biomes created around the world.
Art: We will explore a range of techniques, including one-point perspective, and applying it to a desert-inspired landscape picture. Pencil sketches of our local Cartmel Priory will also be a feature of this terms art study.
Science: We will look at plants and the different requirements of survival, comparing growing plants/vegetables in our region with those in other climates, such as the North American deserts. We'll also be looking at animals and habitats - linked to our topic.
Design and Technology: We will be researching, designing and creating a cardboard picture frame. Once complete we will evaluate our finished product.
Computing: Children will be developing their video and animations skills, design, control and sequencing skills and their logical reasoning via electronic communication and digital research. They will access many tools on Purple Mash.
PE: We will be following the Key Steps 2 gymnastics programme before moving on to exploring a range of dances. We are very lucky to have a range of highly skilled out of school agencies to support the children in their physical development and this term we will be having weekly football sessions.
Religious Education: We will consider what Jesus taught people about the Kingdom of God through parables and how Christians prepare for Easter. Our worship themes this term are Courage and Forgiveness
Music: Linked to our topic the children will be learning songs about the rainforest and crocodiles. They will cover different aspects: pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timber, texture and beat.
Reading: Children and heard reading twice a week - either 1:1 with their own book or as part of a guided reading session. They also experience weekly reading comprehension activities.
Handwriting: We follow a handwriting programme called Letter-Join. This is an online interactive resource which aids the practice of cursive handwriting and uses interactive animations to demonstrate joined up letter formation.
