Class 1 - The Busy Bee Class 2021 - 2022

Mrs Walker

Mrs Walker

Hello! I am the class 1 teacher. Prior to teaching class 1, I had the pleasure of teaching years 2 and 3 at Cartmel and a year 3 class in Camden, London. Teaching is a true vocation for me and I love planning activities to excite and motivate my class. In addition to my teaching responsibilities I am the subject leader for: Literacy, History and Geography.

Miss Taylor-Crozier

Hello! I teach Class 1 on Thursdays and Fridays. I love teaching PE and geography and I am passionate about outdoor learning. The majority of my experience in teaching has been in KS1 and EYFS. I am also the subject lead for PE and French.

Welcome to our class page! The children in the Busy Bee class are taught in different ways throughout the day. We have a variety of approaches including focus group activities, whole class activities, self-initiated activities and objective-led planning. At the beginning of each term we set off with a topic or theme in mind which we think will interest and motivate our eager learners, but we are flexible in our approach and shape our planning to match the evolving interests of the children within our class.

Summer 1

This half term our topic is: The Great Fire of London

Through the teaching of this topic, the following curriculum areas will be covered;

English: We will be writing reports, letters and diaries and focusing upon Julia Donaldson following our trip to see 'Zog and the Flying Doctors'.

Maths: developing our key skills in number and place value, length and height and weight and volume.

Science: we will be learning all about our wonderful (and not so wonderful!) weather, looking at rainfall, temperatures, shadows and creating weather stations to monitor it.

Design and Technology and Art: we will be making our own 17th century houses like those in the Great Fire of London using a range of materials and methods. We will also study St Paul’s Cathedral and make sketches, prints, clay sculptures and 3D models inspired by this great building.

Geography:
we will be learning all about London, looking at maps of the UK and revising the UK's countries and their capital cities.

History: we will learn all about The Great Fire of London! We will look at the timeline of the event, learn about fire safety, the food at the time and how to make bread, study buildings of the period and create our own and write our own diaries like Samuel Pepys.

PSHE: Boris the robot, learning how to be ‘HeartSmart'. The topic this half term is 'Fake is a Mistake!' We will also be working with Mrs Battersby to be 'KidSafe' as we learn about our mental health.

ICT: looking at data and continuing to develop our key skills such as using a mouse and familiar programmes such as Purple Mash.

Music: Sing Up - Down there under the sea.

PE: we will be working with Jack from OnSide on a Tuesday afternoon doing multi-skills and John from Cumbria Cricket on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child(ren) have their PE kit in school on these days.

RE: we will be learning about my world and Jesus's world.

Phonics and Spellings
Children in Reception and Year 1 have a daily ability grouped phonics session each morning. They practise sounds already taught and learn new phonemes and graphemes through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds.

Reading

Our reading books are organised to match the phonics scheme of learning. Children are heard reading at least twice a week within school, either 1:1 with their own book or as part of a guided session. Children also take part in ‘Headstart’ reading comprehension activities and share their books with a book buddy. Please can children try and read every day at home as this helps to improve blending, comprehension, grammar and spelling and most importantly helps to develop a life-long love of reading for pleasure.

Homework

As homework we would like your child to read daily and to practise their spellings (year one). We may set suggested activities alongside school learning via Tapestry if you wish to have a go at these. Children in class one will have no physical weekly homework to complete.
