Class 1 - The Busy Bee Class 2021 - 2022

Mrs Walker

Mrs Walker

Hello! I am the class 1 teacher. Prior to teaching class 1, I had the pleasure of teaching years 2 and 3 at Cartmel and a year 3 class in Camden, London. Teaching is a true vocation for me and I love planning activities to excite and motivate my class. In addition to my teaching responsibilities I am the subject leader for: Literacy, History and Geography.

Hello! I teach Class 1 on Thursdays and Fridays. I love teaching PE and geography and I am passionate about outdoor learning. The majority of my experience in teaching has been in KS1 and EYFS. I am also the subject lead for PE and French.

Welcome to our class page! The children in the Busy Bee class are taught in different ways throughout the day. We have a variety of approaches including focus group activities, whole class activities, self-initiated activities and objective-led planning. At the beginning of each term we set off with a topic or theme in mind which we think will interest and motivate our eager learners, but we are flexible in our approach and shape our planning to match the evolving interests of the children within our class.

Autumn (1)

This term our topic is: Our School and Local Area

Through the teaching of this topic, the following curriculum areas will be covered;

English: we will be focusing on families and repetitive stories. This will include some key texts such as; Five Minutes Peace, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, The Great Big Book of Families, Little Rabbit Foo Foo and Mrs Armitage. We will learn about characters, settings and retelling familiar stories.

Maths: developing our key skills in number and place value, addition and subtraction, problem solving, 2D and 3D shape, reasoning and measurement.

Science: we will be learning all about ourselves! We will learn about the human body and senses, observe changes over time and think about how we change as we get older as we collect data, look for patterns and carry out investigations.

Design and Technology and Art: year one will be training our reception children to use the woodwork bench safely and to plan, create and evaluate their masterpieces.

Geography:
we will be using simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of our school and its grounds, looking at the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment. We will also practise using compass directions and locational and directional language to describe the location of features and routes on a map.

History: we will be learning all about the past of our school and local area, visiting some key sites of interest and comparing it to the present.

PSHE: Boris the robot, learning how to be ‘HeartSmart’.

ICT: looking at e-safety and continuing to develop our key skills such as using a mouse and familiar programmes such as Purple Mash.

Music: Sing Up and Harvest.

PE: children will be working with a coach on a Tuesday afternoon and Miss Taylor-Crozier on a Thursday afternoon, practising their fundamental movement skills and increasing their control and accuracy when using equipment. Please ensure your child(ren) have their PE kit in school on these days.

RE: children will be learning about Harvest.

Phonics and Spellings
Children in Reception and Year 1 have a daily ability grouped phonics session each morning. They practise sounds already taught and learn new phonemes and graphemes through Letters and Sounds. Please see the videos below for the sounds in each phase.

Reading

Our reading books are organised to match the phonics scheme of learning. Children are heard reading at least twice a week within school, either 1:1 with their own book or as part of a guided session. Children also take part in ‘Headstart’ reading comprehension activities and share their books with a book buddy. Please can children try and read every day at home as this helps to improve blending, comprehension, grammar and spelling and most importantly helps to develop a life-long love of reading for pleasure.

Homework

As homework we would like your child to read daily and to practise their spellings (year one). We may set suggested activities alongside school learning via Tapestry if you wish to have a go at these. Children in class one will have no physical weekly homework to complete.
