Mrs Walker

Hello! I am the class 1 teacher. Prior to teaching class 1, I had the pleasure of teaching years 2 and 3 at Cartmel and a year 3 class in Camden, London. Teaching is a true vocation for me and I love planning activities to excite and motivate my class. In addition to my teaching responsibilities I am the subject leader for: Literacy, History and Geography.

Hello! I teach Class 1 on Thursdays and Fridays. I love teaching PE and geography and I am passionate about outdoor learning. The majority of my experience in teaching has been in KS1 and EYFS. I am also the subject lead for PE and French.

Welcome to our class page! The children in the Busy Bee class are taught in different ways throughout the day. We have a variety of approaches including focus group activities, whole class activities, self-initiated activities and objective-led planning. At the beginning of each term we set off with a topic or theme in mind which we think will interest and motivate our eager learners, but we are flexible in our approach and shape our planning to match the evolving interests of the children within our class.

Summer (2)

This term our topic is: Dinosaurs and Imaginary Communities.

Through the teaching of this topic, the following curriculum areas will be covered;

English: We will continue our Imaginary Community World work (supported by the CHOL theatre company). In addition to this we hope to consider a range of humorous stories and Spike Milligan texts.

Maths: developing our key skills in number and place value, addition and subtraction, problem solving, times tables and fractions, reasoning, measurement, ratio and proportion. Please see a file below for activities you can complete with your child.

Science: we will be continuing to monitor and observe the growth of our bean plants and completing our bean diaries. We will also be learning all about seasonal change, consolidating the seasons, weather and occasions associated with these and things such as how to stay safe in the sun.

Design and Technology and Art: We will be using Papier-mâché and other modelling materials to create places for our imaginary community work in English.

Geography:
Our geography links very well with science this half term and we will be looking at wonderful weather! The children will be applying their already fantastic knowledge from last half term and developing this to learn about our weather and the differences between us and other countries. (Extending onto why this is for Year 1).

History: We will be learning all about the prehistoric past - dinosaurs, fossils and Mary Anning.

PSHE: Boris the robot, learning how to be ‘HeartSmart’ with Mrs Battersby. Children will also be looking at changes.

ICT: looking at e-safety and continuing to develop our key skills such as using a mouse and familiar programmes such as Purple Mash.

Music: Charanga, Sing Up, following the rhythm and beat and putting their own music to familiar stories.

PE: children will be working with year two practising their fundamental movement skills for athletics as they increase their control and accuracy when using equipment. We will also be taking part in Judo sessions each week with professional coach Danny Harper. PE is on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, please ensure your child(ren) have their PE kit in school on these days.

RE: children will be learning about different places of worship and what it means to belong to the Church for Christians.

Phonics and Spellings
Children in Reception and Year 1 have a daily ability grouped phonics session each morning. They practise sounds already taught and learn new phonemes and graphemes through Letters and Sounds. Please see a video below for the sounds and actions.

Reading
Our reading books are organised to match the phonics scheme of learning. Children are heard reading at least twice a week within school, either 1:1 with their own book or as part of a guided session. Children also take part in ‘Headstart’ reading comprehension activities and share their books with a book buddy. Please can children try and read every day at home as this helps to improve blending, comprehension, grammar and spelling and most importantly helps to develop a life-long love of reading for pleasure.
